A clean September sun cuts the clear ultramarine sky at a low angle, casting long trailing shadows across the trail despite the early afternoon hour. Just past the autumnal equinox, it seems to be heading for a rapid rendezvous with its winter nesting grounds in the south, and hangs lower in the sky than usual. The sun is apparently a snowbird.
