The annual Solid Gold Championship Bull Riding series entertained a full house at Vernal’s Western Park Arena Friday and Saturday night, and ornery bulls such as Tuxedo and Ragin’ Cajun, who made names for themselves on the Professional Bull Riding tour, were in the chutes waiting for the cowboys. The big winner Friday night was cowboy Quincy Adams, who took home $770 in winnings. Rylan Wright won $575, Hallen Duncan won $385, and Justin Jardines won $190. In Saturday night’s bull-riding, Brad Crook won $697, Mike Haden won $314, and Brian Larsen and Rusty Ogden won $110 apiece. In addition to the bull-riders, the dirt floor of Western Park’s heated indoor arena also showcased lively mutton-busters, speedy barrel-racers, and riders on horseback carrying multi-colored flags bearing the names of the event’s numerous sponsors. Barrel-racing winners for Friday night were Jessica Gregory, who won $150, Denise Sullivan, who won $90, and Hailey Farnsworth, who won $60. Saturday night, Gregory’s horse was again the fastest around the barrels, netting her $125. Kristy Wilkerson won $38, and Teri Dubray won $18. Saturday night had a grim reminder of the danger inherent in straddling an 1,800-lb animal bred to be cantankerous. A cowboy had his leg broken and his eight-second ride cut short by a carousing bull’s hoof. Another cowboy’s hand got tangled in the rope wrapped around the bull’s body, and was dragged across the arena before he got free. He walked away unhurt. “It’s not if you’re going to get hurt,” event promoter Bill Crittendon said, “It’s when you’re going to get hurt.”
