Technology gets in the way only when it's used as a substitute for learning, as when (as is all too common these days) my bill at a restaurant is $1.07 and I hand the cashier $10.12 and she gives me back a five dollar bill, three one dollar bills and a dollar and twelve cents in change because she can't subtract 1.07 from 10.12 and arrive at 9.05 without a calculator being present.
