Power was knocked out for two hours on Friday for 1,942 Rocky Mountain Power customers in Vernal and Naples after a car ran into non-energized anchor wires for the utility, which then hit energized wires. Power was out at 1 p.m. and was restored by 3:19 p.m., according to Rocky Mountain Power spokesman Jeff Hymas.

A power outage affecting 1,942 Rocky Mountain Power customers in Vernal and Naples was caused by a car accident at the turn onto 500 South near the Dinaland Golf Course, according to spokesman for Rocky Mountain Power Jeff Hymas.

Naples Police Lt. Manny Escoto said the driver of the 2007 Dodge Nitro was traveling too fast for the curve and crashed into a nearby ditch after hitting a power utility anchor wire, a STRATA Networks anchor wire, a fire hydrant and a Naples city sign.

Escoto cited the driver, Vergil Carmickle, 47, of Vernal, for DUI.

Hymas said, the vehicle caught some “non-energized wires connected to a power pole that helped to anchor the pole to the ground. When that happened it caused the non-energized wires to make contact to the energized wires.”

The power outage began right after the accident just before 1 p.m. and it was restored by 3:19 p.m., Hymas said.

The Ashley Valley Water and Sewer Improvement District sent crews to perform a Blue Stake before the utility company and STRATA could re-connect the anchor wires.
