Wanted man turns himself in to police
Officers from the Unified Police Department of Salt lake City took a wanted fugitive into custody after tracking him to the Uintah Basin. The 21-year-old convicted sex offender, Nicholas (Nick) Shane Hamby, reportedly turned himself in to the Vernal city police on Friday at 2:50 p.m. according to police. “We were contacted by officers from the Joint Criminal Apprehension Team to pick him up in Vernal,” said Unified Police Department spokesperson Det. Shane Manwaring. Manwaring says the local JCAT team consists of member of the US Marshall’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Vernal and Roosevelt police departments. Hamby was taken into custody without incident at the Vernal Police Department on a charge of fugitive evasion and transported by UPD officers back to the Wasatch Front. Hamby previously pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court to unlawful sexual activity with a minor, a class A misdemeanor, and was sentenced to 120 days jail and probation. A warrant was issued by the Salt Lake court for Hamby after he failed to comply with the conditions of his probation was ordered to surrender to jail last summer. Information leading JCAT officers to concentrate their search in the Uintah Basin put pressure on Hamby which contributed to his surrender, Manwaring said. The woman officers previously thought he was with called the Vernal Express and said she helped UPD officers apprehend him and had no recent relationship with him.
