Wrestling takes fifth at Green River tourney
Uintah High School wrestling followed up its fifth-place showing at the Tournament of Champions by traveling to Green River, Wyo., where Dakotah Holmes, Beau Blackham and Jed Rich went undefeated. Holmes win capped a perfect, 14-0 month of Jan. for the tenacious 152-pounder. As a team, Uintah finished third at Green River, despite forfeiting two weight classes due to injury and illness. Uintah beat Central Cheyenne, Riverton, Worland, Torrington, and Evanston; losing to Douglas by five points and East Cheyenne by two points. “We felt we we should have won the tournament,” Uintah head coach Gregg Stensgard said, “but we made a few mistakes that cost us our opportunity.” Stensgard said Matt Batty, Braydee Nielson, and Clay Reynolds all also wrestled well at Green River. Last Wednesday, Uintah hosted its rival, Union High School, and celebrated its senior night before beginning a dual match against the Cougars. “They have a good team and they came to wrestle,” Stensgard said of Union. Nine Uintah wrestlers won against Union. Holmes, Blackham, Nielson, Rich, and Justin Redd all had pins, and Reynolds, Chet Boren, Chance Hiatt, and Quinton Pharr had the other four wins. The final score was 47-25 for Uintah. Uintah was scheduled to drive to Denver for the Top of the Rockies tournament this weekend, but Stensgard canceled the trip due to inclement weather. “We didn’t want to get stuck there, especially this close to region,” Stensgard said. Uintah appears to be getting healthy at the right time of the year, Stensgard said. The team will now have two full weeks to practice before the Region 10 duals on Feb. 3. “We’re in it to win region, and I think we will,” Stensgard said.
